Why WordPress?
WordPress is both a blogging tool and CMS (Content Management System) that is very easy to setup and has a very good track record for support. There are many themes (files that give the web-site its look and feel) and plugins (programs that added extra functionality) available to your site.
How Much does it Cost?
WordPress itself has no cost associated with it. It is open-source software using the GPL-2 license. There is a cost for your domain (www.whatever.com) and a cost for hosting. There may also be a cost for the Theme you choose and some Plugins are commercial and may have a small cost. As a guide a .com.au domain is $66 (Currently $55) for two years, a .com is $39 (Currently $29) for two years & Hosting starts at $77 per year. This includes initial setup, but does not include adding your content or designing a theme.
WordPress 3.2 (released July 2011) had a very good starting theme called ’2011′ which can easily be customised and there are many hundreds of themes that can be installed quickly and easily from within your WordPress admin area. We have recently started using the excellent Theme Framework called Catalyst & can use this to provide you with an excellent canvas for you to start customising your new website – or of course we can do it for you.
What exactly is a CMS?
A Content Management System is a web based facility that allows you the end user to maintain the content of your web site. This is done via a secure login to an admin area of your web site. This content can include news items, new pages, images that may be added to the news items and pages and other documents, such as PDF documents. But if you feel this may be too hard for you, we can make arrangements for you to send us the content & we can add it for you.
I’ve heard WordPress is just for bloggers ? is that true?
Although it is true that WordPress is an excellent web based program for blogging (having a news or articles section of your site), it does not have to be configured that way. You can choose to not have a blog or news page at all. You can also choose to have a blog/news page as either your home page or on a different page. The choice is yours & things can be changed at any time.
How many e-mail addresses can I have?
There is no limit (within reason!). You can access your web site admin area to add new ones (or we can do it for you).
If I decide to go ahead how long does it take?
It takes a couple of hours to register a .com domain and around 24 hours for a .com.au ( a .com.au requires that the name matches a business or product name and an ABN & Business numbers are required). Following this your WordPress powered website is available within a couple of hours for you (or us) to start adding the content!
